The Scream Sets Highest Price for Any Work of Art at Auction




















Auction history was made at Sotheby’s last night: Edvard Munch’s The Scream sold for $119.9m, a new record for any work of art at auction.

The Impressionist & Modern Art Sale brought in a total of $330.6 million, the second highest auction total in Sotheby's history.

Although "The Scream" set a new record at auction, the most expensive paintings ever sold have been primarily through private sale, the core focus at organisations such as Chaz Sargent & Company. Paul Cézannes's "The Card Players" sold for $250 Million USD in a 2011 private sale.
